Breakout Sessions for Graduate Students and Early Career Researchers

Breakout Sessions for Graduate Students and Early Career Researchers

The organizers are pleased to announce two breakout sessions for graduate students and early career researchers that will take place during the conference. We hope that many will take the opportunity to participate in the workshop and/or come and meet other researchers who are at the early stages in their career.

Please see below for further information and registration.

1. Developing your Hook : Storytelling and Public Outreach Techniques for Historians

14 August, 14-15:30, followed by a Meet & Mingle 15:30-17.  Location TBA.

Capped at 15 participants

In our era of social media-fueled skepticism towards academic expertise and outright historical denialism, it is imperative that historians start retaking the public square. This intensive workshop will help you begin doing so by exposing you to storytelling techniques which can help you present your research to generalist audiences in an engaging manner. You will put these techniques for “hooking“ your audience into practice through flash presentations and receive feedback from your peers, all in a supportive, nurturing atmosphere.  Participants should bring a laptop.

2. Looking Beyond the Finish Line: How to Stress Less and Begin Planning Now for Work and Life after Graduation

15 August, 14-15:30, followed by a Meet & Mingle 15:30-17.  Location TBA.

Many early career researchers are so focused on their research that they do not take the time to think properly about what they want and can do after completing their doctorate or postdoctoral fellowship. While this laser-like focus is necessary and indeed commendable, it can lead ECRs to defer the necessary work of thinking about future career possibilities, which in turn can cause anxiety and even impede graduation. This workshop will carve out time for you to think deeply about potential career paths.  Participants should bring a laptop.

About the instructor: Dr. Toby Erik Wikström heads the skills development program for early career researchers and supervisors at the University of Iceland Graduate School. A scholar of early modern French literature, he also holds the position of Research Specialist at the university´s Faculty of Languages and Cultures.
